Moneyclip: Hold a carboot sale

This is the sixth post of the Moneyclip series which aims to give you a quick and easy tip on how to save money. See the rest here.

This, admittedly, requires more effort than the previous tips but it can also pay off more. I’m always discussing my desire to reduce the amount of items I own and what better way to make money than to sell them?

A few weeks ago my family and I collected all the items we no longer used and spent 3 hours at a carboot. We made a profit of £90 in just a day and most importantly we gave up those items that we never use. Those items are no longer taking up space in our house or our minds.
Most of you reading this will have gone through some sort of move so take the next opportunity to look at what you own critically. Aim to find 10 things you don’t use and that you could sell. If you do this every week, after a month you will have enough for a carboot.
Find out about a carboot in your local area that has space for lots of cars. We chose a more expensive carboot but managed to sell enough to have made it worth it. We knew most people attended this carboot so the extra entrance fee wasn’t an issue.

A very simple and easy way of avoiding those sugary, e-number filled drinks that tempt you on campus. Water is best at keeping you hydrated and feeling healthier.

If you’re hydrated it will help maintain your concentration levels in addition to combatting tiredness and hangovers. Sometimes thirst can be mistaken for hunger which could lead to you overeating and further starving your body of essential water.

If you don’t like drinking water then keep a bottle of squash on you. The point is to avoid £2-3 being spent daily on something that you could essentially bring from home. Yes the savings may be small but over a year it can come to £1095. Wouldn’t that be better spent on a holiday after your exams?

This is the second post of the Moneyclip series which aims to give you a quick and easy tip on how to save money. See the others here.

If you’re on any pay as you go mobile phone it really pays to top-up at Boots. As an advantage card holder you’re entitled to 40 points (which is 40p to spend at Boots) for every £10 you top-up.

If you, for example, topped up £15 every month with your Boots advantage after a year you would have accumulated 720 points or £7.20 to spend at Boots.

When I was on PAYG I used these points to pay for my lunch if I’d forgotten to pack one. That way I didn’t have to increase my Eating Out budget.
